Employee Spotlight: Willis Meriwether

Every day for more than 40 years, Southern Nuclear employees have been improving the lives of our neighbors in Alabama and Georgia. Meet one of our folks who’s dedicated to providing you with clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy.

Willis Meriwether, senior contracts agent, Birmingham

Nickname: Dad (best nickname anyone could ever have)

How long have you been with the company: 6 years

What are your current job responsibilities? I handle the request for proposals process for major projects across the fleet and draft and negotiate the contracts for these projects.

What do you love about your job? People.  I am fortunate to be around very dedicated and driven people that are committed to getting the job done right.

Hometown: Tuscaloosa, Alabama (Roll Tide!)

First job (not your first job at SNC): My first job as a teenager was bagging groceries at the local Bruno’s.  My first real job was as a corporate lawyer in a Birmingham law firm.

Favorite food: Spaghetti and all kinds of seafood

What is your favorite movie and why? Tie. Animal House (it is the greatest comedy of all time) and The Shawshank Redemption (moving and powerful).

If given the chance, who would you want to be for a day? Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon. Anyone that can turn an online bookstore into an $800 billion business must be fascinating. Also, Nick Saban.

What are your hobbies? Golf, hunting, and fishing.

What interests you about nuclear energy? I think that it is amazing that nuclear energy is responsible for 16 percent of Southern Company’s energy supply, is roughly 70 percent cheaper per kilowatt hour than both gas and coal, and has zero emissions.  That’s a big deal.
