Voilanda Cartwright: After Sept. 11, 2001, ‘I wanted to do my part’

Voilanda Cartwright says one of the best things about the military is the bonds and trust you build with others who will always have your back.

May is Military Appreciation Month, when we honor the service and sacrifice of current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Voilanda Cartwright, Supply Chain sourcing specialist at our Birmingham office, tells us about her military experience, including how her service has influenced her work at Southern Nuclear.

When and why did you join the military?

I joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in September 2002 after the devastation of Sept. 11, 2001. I wanted to do my part to ensure the safety of my country and those that I love.

What is your role in the military?

Currently I am the leading petty officer over a defense logistics agency unit of a joint military unit. Our purpose is to dispose of excess Department of Defense (DOD) personal property, foreign excess personal property (FEPP), scrap, hazardous waste and property requiring demilitarization.

Have you been deployed recently? What did your deployment involve?

My last deployment was in 2017 in Kuwait. I oversaw and coordinated the transportation of excess DOD personal property, FEPP, scrap, replacement equipment and property requiring demilitarization internationally and stateside.

Is there anything you wish others knew about serving in the military?

The great thing about the military is the bonds and experiences that you receive throughout your career with those who you trust and who trust you in any situation. The fact is, we may have our differences, but at the end of the day we have each other’s back!

How has your military service influenced your work at Southern Nuclear?

The military instilled a drive for teamwork and resiliency that I feel has helped me thus far at Southern Nuclear. You must possess flexibility to ensure success for you and your team in every aspect whether it’s military, civilian and/or family.

What does Military Appreciation Month mean to you?

Military appreciation means taking the time to acknowledge the strengths and sacrifices of those who have served, are currently serving, those who will in the future and the families that support them from home. It also means thanking those who serve for their unwavering commitment!
